With HoofPrint Trails, you will ride on horseback through the old colonial routes of Costa Rica—The road less traveled that crosses mountains towards the sea.
Accompanied by Valo, an authentic cowboy of the region and local resident of Salitrales, you will have opportunity to disconnect from the non-stop hustle and bustle of your daily life, and savor the unique lifestyle that Costa Rican farmers have enjoyed for hundreds of years. We invite visitors to witness a traditional Costa Rican landscape - journey through mountain, jungle, and beach, and step into a panorama of forgotten customs and places.
We have planned different routes that most suit your interests and vacation itinerary. Below is a general overview of the sites and experiences that make these tours special.
Esterillos Tour
5 DAYS
Our Esterillos tour is a mountains-to-beach experience, weaving through rivers, ending up on the pristine and isolated shores of Esterillos beach.
Enjoy the traditional ways of the outback throughout the course of 5 days. Departing from Santiago de Puriscal, we will ride to the river Tulín (Río Tulín is where 2 tributaries in the Cerro La Cangreja area converge, a zone that protects the tropical forest in the Puriscal county. It continues its course straight to the Pacific Ocean). Along Río Tulín we can bathe and enjoy birdwatching and other wildlife. On the way we will stop by a Trapiche, a primitive sugar mill and learn everything about how to continue making Costa Rica's trademark “tapa dulce”. Taste unrefined, unbleached, and naturally evaporated sugarcane juice as you watch the wooden grinders and the team of oxen- it's incredible!
The route will continue to take us through mountainous forests and fields of changing vegetation, lodging in ranches and local homesteads, until reaching the coast of the Pacific ocean. This trek includes crossing rivers and ancient bridges, resting in hidden grasslands or under age-old trees, lunching in centenary towns, learning with each turn of the road some new trick or old custom. Another highlight of this route is also passing through the Biological Corridor of the Red Macaws, which is an important wild life sanctuary. Finally on the 5th day we arrive on the beach, to refresh ourselves in the Pacific waves and delight in the final day of galloping in the sand or relaxing in the face of a setting sun.

Potenciana Tour
3-4 DAYS
This 3-4 day tour is designed for people who are eager to get to know the heart of the Costa Rica inlands. Riding around and over the hilltops of Cerro La Potenciana, we will enjoy an ascent to the height of the clouds, with short stops in flowery fields and coffee breaks in local homes.
Along the way you will have a chance to get to know the Trapiche, the sugar mill and process that Costa Ricans have used since the 1700s. Overnight we will stay in rainforest hostels, and secluded cabins tucked inside rolling hills. Experience relaxing pond-fishing, bathe in a secluded waterfall, enjoy a meal cooked over an open fire, and witness the spectacular milky way galaxy that can only be seen in such grandeur on truly remote highlands. It is a rare opportunity to live and ride solo with your horse by the edge of such mountainous peaks. From 1600 meters above sea level, we will take in the sight of the Cordillera de Talamanca, the mountain range that stretches from Costa Rica's southwest to beyond the border with Panama and contains the highest peaks of both countries.
After traversing hills and trails macheted by Valo we will reach rancho Doña Soledad, a small mountain paradise hidden in between waterfalls - during the rainy season a spectacular 70m drop waterfall can be approached, but regardless of the time of the year the stream is crystalline. During the 3-day tour we will weave around the Carrara National Park, an important nature reserve of Costa Rica, or we can opt to enter and cross it on a 4-day tour. This journey is a circular route so we will not be doing any backtracking. Salitrales is at the beginning and end of the trip and the center of our operations- a sleepy town with dirt roads and farms, and the home of Valo our infallible guide.

About HoofPrint Trails
Valo is what people call Eduardo Sandi.
Valo, short for Eduardo, owner of HoofPrint Trails, and your infallible guide. Sandí is the token he inherited from his grandfather, along with a long lineage of trapiche sugar refiners and farmers. Valo speaks fondly of his late grandfather, José, and from the stories of José Sandí's days you could tell that he inherited much more than a name. It's a hard worker's spirit, a restless heart that is always seeking adventure beyond the horizon, a love for nature and for sharing. It's natural tendencies like those combined with a life time's experience on the field and a intuitive knowledge of the terrain, that makes these tours possible. Costa Rica's HoofPrint experiences reflect not only the stories of José Sandí as an early century peasant in the Costa Rican valley, but also Valo's own life and aspirations.
So from the people to the food, from the vistas to the trails that Valo clears for our horses using a machete, we hope to bring you inspiration and fun by sharing a little bit of the traditions and beauty of the Costa Rica outback.

Review
It's difficult to write a short trip review for the week-long horse trip I went on with Eduardo and Elena because the trip turned out to be so much more than I could have expected or ever asked for.
My goals for my Costa Rica vacation were simple: enjoy the heat and the ocean, completely remove myself from any connection to my job, experience a totally different environment (I've never been to Central America), and stretch my horse-riding skills. I accomplished all of those things. But as so often happens during travel, it's the unanticipated things that grab you and somehow change you.
The week with Elena, Eduardo, Andrea and Paul fulfilled me in ways I wasn't expecting. Eduardo's open-ness, sense of humour, and absolute joy for being outside with his horses spoke to me regardless of my lack of Spanish. Elena's translation skills are superb, and her unbridled enthusiasm was infectious. We truly experienced Costa Rica off the tourist path. This is a ride of native hospitality, mountainous and wildlife beauty, rugged terrain, and rustic accommodations. We slept with bats above us, we ate fabulous dinners by candlelight, we cantered in a riverbottom with macaws screeching overhead, we gathered lemons to make home-made lemonade, we learned about trapiches and the taste of raw sugar made from sugarcane. I grew to enormously admire and respect the horse I rode named Canelo, whose street smarts were learned from his younger years as a work horse. I thanked Canelo every day for carrying me. The list of my happy memories is a very long one.
This trip is not for everyone, though. It's hot, and the horses work very hard (this trip put me on the steepest horse climbs I have ever done). If you are attached to electricity and mattresses and hot showers, this may not be for you. But if you are looking for a completely unique experience, I can't say enough good things about the trip I had. When we reached the Pacific and had to say goodbye to our two guides and our horses, there was not a dry-eye to be found in the group.
